Sixth Block Seminar of the 2nd Generation [12.08.26]
The sixth block seminar of the 2nd generation of IRTG AMAIZE-P (post-)doctoral researchers was held from March 18-24, 2024 at China Agricultural University (CAU), with one-day visit in Beijing and subsequent three-day excursion to Dali, Yunnan province. The 6th block seminar was combined with a Doctoral Researchers’ International Scientific Conference. It was the first time the block seminar was held in presence in China again since after the pandemic and was very well received.

The formal opening ceremony included Welcome addresses by Ms. Ying Tang, Director of International Office (CAU), by Ms. Grit Puchan, Ministerial Director from Ministry of Food, Rural Affairs and Consumer Protection (MLR) in Baden-Württemberg, by Ms. Friederike Dörfler, Counsellor for Food & Agriculture, at the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Beijing, as well as by the Dean of the College of Resources and Environmental Sciences (CRES) at CAU, Prof. Dr. Lixing Yuan and the Deputy Spokesperson of the IRTG on the German side, Prof. Dr. Joachim Müller.

The Doctoral Researchers’ Conference (March 18-24, 2024), was in large part organized by the doctoral researchers on the Chinese and German sides themselves, and topically divided along the four Subject Areas (SA) of the IRTG. From 18 to 20 March, six external high-level invited speakers from universities and research institutions in China, Germany, the USA, and from an International Association in France, plus three members of the Advisory Board and five scientists from CAU and UHOH, gave scientific and technological lectures, largely in presence in Beijing with only four presenting online. The joint presentations (progress reports) by the (post-)doctoral researchers on the Chinese and German sides were also held from March 18 to 20, 2024. Furthermore, a half-day Workshop on Agricultural Green Development with contributions by six CAU scientists took place on March 23 near Erhai Lake during the excursion to Dali, Yunnan Province.

The number of participants totalled about 110, with 50 on the Chinese and 36 (incl. online participants) on the German side, plus a total of 20 presenting scientists, including the invited speakers.
Excursions
A half-day visit to the Forbidden City in Beijing was organized on March 21, 2024. During the three-day excursion to Dali in Yunnan province (March 22-24, 2024) several half-day visits and excursions in and around Dali were organized. They included several “Science & Technology Backyard Models (STBs)” including field experiments, as well as a visit to Shunfeng organic fertilizer factory producing organic fertilizers from local sources (animal manure and vegetable residues). The local government provides a subsidy of 80 CNY (approx. 11.2 US $) per ton to enterprises that collect and turn livestock and poultry manure and other organic waste into resources. On the last day (March 24) the old town of Shuanglang was visited.
An Advisory Board meeting, including the German and Chinese Principle Investigators (PIs) and Senior Researchers of the IRTG AMAIZE-P was held on March 21, 2024 (in hybrid format). It was chaired by the Spokesperson on the German and the Dean of the College of Resources and Environmental Sciences (CRES) on the Chinese side, respectively.
