Third Block Seminar  [22.11.19]

The 3rd block seminar of the AMAIZE-P IRTG, with the overall topic of "Phosphorus management at field and farm level" took place in Beijing, with excursion to Shandong Province, from November 10-16, 2019.

The 3rd block seminar was combined with the Anniversary Ceremony of 40 Years Collaboration between China Agricultural University and University of Hohenheim held at the CAU on November 15, 2019.

A total of almost 100 participants attended the various events. During the block seminar, three international invited speakers from different universities in US, Australia and Germany, plus two speakers from CAU and University of Hohenheim, respectively, gave scientific lectures for the German and Chinese doctoral candidates on November 13 and 14, 2019.

The presentations (progress reports) by the German and Chinese doctoral candidates and the post-doctoral researcher of the IRTG’s 13 Research Subjects (RS) were held on November 13 and 14, 2019. Most of the German doctoral candidates had already been staying in China since August, September or October 2019, for one- to three-month research stays prior to the 3rd block seminar.

A meeting of all Chinese and German principle investigators and senior scientists in the AMAIZE-P IRTG was held in the afternoon of November 15, 2019.

Excursion

The 3rd block seminar started with an excursion to Tai’an and Qufu in Shandong Province from 10-12 November, 2019, by high-speed train from Beijing. On 11 November in the morning, a visit to Shandong Agricultural University in the city of Tai’an was organized. It included a scientific seminar with an introduction to the State Key Laboratory of Crop Biology and four scientific lectures by scientists of the university, as well as an introduction to the University of Hohenheim, its Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and the AMAIZE-P IRTG by scientists from Hohenheim. This was followed by a tour through the State Key Lab and a visit to the experimental farm, including a large lysimeter.

In the afternoon of November 11 a visit to Mount Tai (Taishan 泰山) near Tai’an, one of the five Taoist sacred mountains of China and UNESCO World Heritage site, took place. Starting mid-level at the “Midway Gate to Heaven” (Zhongtianmen 中天门) (700 m a.s.l.), all participants reached the peak of Mount Tai at 1545 m climbing steep stone steps, and visited scenic spots at the top. The return downhill was by cable car.

On November 12, the city of Qufu, hometown of Confucius, was visited. This included the ‘Three Confucian sites', i.e. the Temple of Confucius (kongmiao 孔庙), the Kong Family Mansion (kongfu 孔府) and the Cemetery of Confucius (konglin 孔林;) - a forest where Confucius and many of his descendants of 76 generations are buried. Together, the three sites have been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The return to Beijing was on November 12 in the evening by high-speed train.

Educational programme

As educational programme for the doctoral researchers, Prof. Dr. Hans Lambers of the University of West Australia delivered a special lecture in the evening of November 14, 2019.

On November 15, the German and Chinese doctoral researchers attended an afternoon session with brief progress reports by a total of 22 doctoral researchers from the CAU participating in the parallel doctoral programme between CAU and WUR (Wageningen, NL) supported by the China Scholarship Coucil (CSC). Their reports were grouped under the following four main topics: Green plant production, Integrated plant - animal production, Green products & Green industry, Green ecological environment. There are thematic links with several Research Subjects of the AMAIZE-P IRTG.
